The benefits of value engineering are simple: low cost and high value. Many people may think that value engineering involves making cuts to a project and reducing the quality of materials used in order to lower the cost of the overall project, but this isn’t true!

By definition, value engineering is a systematic method to improve the “value” of goods or products and services by using an examination of their function rather than what the good or service actually is. The practice was begun at General Electric during World War II due to the need to account for skilled labor, raw materials, and component parts shortages. This qualitative method of analysis is similar to the scientific method in that it focuses on hypotheses and conclusions when testing and performing operational research.
